Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported that YouTube earned $8.92 billion in advertising revenue in its third-quarter earnings, marking a 12.2% increase year-over-year. Analysts on Wall Street had expected $8.89 billion in ad revenue for the platform, according to Variety.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, noted that YouTube has generated over $50 billion in revenue over the last four quarters—averaging more than $12.5 billion per quarter. These figures exclude revenue from YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, and NFL Sunday Ticket subscriptions. While Alphabet doesn’t routinely provide detailed YouTube earnings each quarter, these results highlight significant growth.

Olympic Content and Ad Commitments Boost Engagement

Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief commercial officer, announced on the third-quarter earnings call that YouTube’s advertising commitments increased by 20% year-over-year. He also mentioned that coverage of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics received 12 billion views, with 35% of viewing time spent on YouTube TV.

Alphabet’s Strong Overall Performance

In the same period, Alphabet’s total revenue reached $88.27 billion, reflecting a 15% year-over-year growth, notes NIXSolutions. The company’s net income was $26.3 billion, a 34% increase, translating to earnings per share of $2.12. This exceeded Wall Street’s projections of $86.3 billion in revenue and $1.85 per share, based on data from LSEG.
