NIXSOLUTIONS: App Download Trends and Top Earners in July 2024

AppFigures has once again compiled a ranking of the most downloaded apps in the world in July. The trend this year is a steady slowdown in download rates, which is what happened in the summer.

Instagram was the most downloaded app in the world in July. According to App Intelligence, it retained its No. 1 spot with 61 million downloads from the App Store and Google Play, which is the same as in June.

TikTok took second place with 51 million downloads, which is slightly less than in June, but quite in line with the current trend. The drop occurred mainly in the App Store and a little in Google Play.

Facebook, WhatsApp and Temu round out the top five. The social network and messenger have slightly fewer downloads than in June.

Temu, however, moved up to fifth place, moving up one place compared to June, thanks to a 30% increase in downloads, adding 11 million new downloads in July. Temu had its biggest month ever for installs in July, finishing the month with 38 million new downloads from the App Store and Google Play. The growth was driven by Temu’s expansion into Brazil, one of the countries with the most downloads on Google Play. Temu launched there in June after receiving a tax break that was later rescinded by the government. Clearly, tax break or not, Brazilians want Temu, and that trend is unlikely to slow down now that Temu is growing in the US.

July was also a change, with Telegram and CapCut down, while Threads and Snapchat were up.

AppFigures estimates that the top 10 downloaded apps in July were downloaded from the App Store and Google Play a combined 352 million times. That’s a slight decline from July, so the trend is continuing. We’ll keep you updated on how these trends develop in the coming months.

Top Earning Apps

The top-earning apps saw their revenue grow 11% in July, according to App Intelligence. That’s a big jump! That growth brings the total closer to a billion.

TikTok was once again the world’s highest-grossing app in July. It ended the month with an estimated $221 million, up nearly 20% from June. And that’s net revenue, or what’s left over after Apple and Google take their cut.

YouTube’s revenue grew 11%, finishing second in July with $150 million in net revenue.

Disney+, Tinder, and Max rounded out the top five highest-grossing apps in July.

In fact, the list is nearly identical to June, with only one of the 10 apps on the list being different from June, and that’s Peacock, notes NIXSOLUTIONS.

Peacock replaced Hulu thanks to a revenue surge fueled by the Olympics. Peacock is estimated to have brought in $40 million in net revenue in July, up significantly from the $32 million the streaming service has averaged each month since April.

While the Olympics are to blame for this spike, Peacock has seen significant growth overall over the past year.

AppFigures estimates that the top 10 grossing apps brought in $880 million in net revenue across the App Store and Google Play in July.

That’s the closest we’ve ever seen to a billion, and since we’re looking at net revenue, that’s what developers are keeping for themselves. And it’s a trend we’re seeing across all apps, not just the top grossers.
