Google has started testing ads in its new AI-powered search experience, known as AI Mode. This feature appears as a chat tab at the top of the search results page and provides users with brief summaries based on their search queries. Alongside these AI-generated responses, users may now also see recommendations from advertisers.
For example, a user searching for “how to create a website” will receive step-by-step instructions generated by the AI, while also potentially seeing a “helpful” ad for a website builder marked with the “Sponsored” label. According to The Verge, Google has begun testing these types of ads in both search results and product listings. The test is being conducted across all devices, including desktop and mobile.
Ad Expansion in AI Overviews
In addition to the chat-style AI Mode, Google is expanding ad placement within AI Overviews—automatically generated summaries that appear at the top of search results. Previously limited to mobile devices, these AI Overviews are now rolling out on desktop as well. As an example, someone searching for travel advice on flying with dogs might see ads featuring offers on dog carriers alongside the AI summary.
This rollout began on May 21 for users in the United States, notes NIXsolutions. For now, these ads will only appear in AI Overviews for U.S. users on computers. Google has stated its intention to gradually introduce sponsored content in English-language AI Overviews in select countries, though no specific timeline has been given. Versions in other languages are also in the works, yet the company has not provided a launch date.
As Google continues testing and expanding this new ad format, more changes may be expected. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available and as Google refines its approach across different languages and regions.
