Opera has introduced a new AI-powered feature called Browser Operator, designed to assist users in performing everyday online tasks. This tool allows users to delegate actions such as searching for products, booking hotels, and purchasing tickets. The company sees this as a major advancement, describing it as a paradigm shift in web browsing that streamlines complex searches and decision-making processes.
How Browser Operator Works
Browser Operator automates tasks that typically require manual searching, analyzing multiple sources, and comparing results. Instead of users visiting multiple websites and filtering through information themselves, the AI does the work for them. Opera emphasizes that all data processing happens locally on the user’s device, ensuring privacy by not transferring information to the cloud.
To use the feature, users simply enter a request in a small window at the bottom of the screen. According to PCWorld, this allows for a more efficient and intuitive browsing experience. During a demonstration, a request was made to find “12 pairs of white Nike socks available for purchase.” The AI quickly broke the task into stages, performed a search, and presented suitable options. A similar process was used to locate tickets for a football match, followed by airline tickets and hotel accommodations for the required dates.
Availability and Limitations
Despite its efficiency, Browser Operator does not handle transactions directly. Instead, it stops at the checkout screen, allowing users to finalize their purchases manually. Opera states that this limitation is intentional, citing security concerns and the importance of maintaining user trust.
It is not yet confirmed whether the feature will be free or require a subscription, notes NIXsolutions. However, Opera has hinted that the AI’s need for significant computing resources could indicate potential costs in the future. The tool is currently available as a preview version, giving users an early look at its capabilities.
The official launch will take place as part of Opera’s AI Feature Drop program, though no exact release date has been announced. We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge about availability and pricing.
